'Waltzing Matilda’는 1895년 시인 Andrew Barton (Banjo) Parteson이 지은 詩인데 여기에 곡을 붙인 Waltzing Matilda’ (왈칭 마틸다)는 1977년까지 호주의 국가였으나, 1977년 국민투표에 의해 ‘Advance Australia Fair’ 43.2%, 'Waltzing Matilda’ 28.3%, ‘God Save the Queen’ 18.7%, 'Song of Australia' 9.8%로 ‘Advanced Australia Fair’로 결정되었어도 마틸다가 계속 국가로 애용되다가 1984년 드디어 정식으로 Advanced Australia Fair가 최종적으로 국가로 지정되었다. 그러나, 아직도 호주의 비공식 국가로 많은 사람들에게 사랑받고 있는 곡이다. (◈ ‘Advance Australia Fair’는 Scottish-born composer, Peter Dodds McCormick이 작사, 작곡하여 1878부터 널리 불리던 곡이다)
Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson은 호주 $10 지폐에 새겨져 있다.
Waltzing Matilda는 실제로 어느 한 부랑자가 양을 훔쳐 작은 강가에 숨어 생활을 했는데, 경찰에게 쫓기다가 끝내 강에 빠져 죽었고, 그 이후로 그 강가에서는 영혼의 노래소리가 들렸다고 하는 내용의 노래이다.
